Tiger's-eye, also called "tiger eye" and "tigers eye," is a very popular gemstone that displays a chatoyancy (cat's-eye). A cat’s eye is a light shimmering glaze that coats the stone but is incredibly hard to see unless it’s under the right light. This effect is caused by the mineral’s natural parallel structures and reflective light that hits these minute, needle-like fibers.

It is a quartz gemstone, usually amber to brown in color, that forms when fibers of the mineral crocidolite are replaced by silica. This structure of parallel fibers is preserved in the stone, and the chatoyant "eye" crosses the parallel fibers at right angles. It is a member of the Chalcedony mineral class with a silky luster & opaque transparency.

Tiger’s Eye is formed from Crocidolite, a bluish-gray stone. Crocidolite itself is a kind of asbestos mineral, whose composition is made of fibers that are fine & dense. Each of the fibers that compose the crocidolite is placed in a wavy parallel orientation. This specific position creates a unique effect known as chatoyant. Crocidolite transforms gradually into quartz until the transformation ends resulting in Tiger's Eye.

During the process of crocidolite becoming quartz, the color changes from bluish gray to the familiar brown-gold. Sometimes the transformation does not fully complete.

When the creation of Tiger's Eye is incomplete, the result is Blue Tiger's Eye or Hawk's Eye. The resulting stone maintains some of its original bluish gray color along with some yellowish-brown streaks or overtones. When a stone shows these characteristics, it is referred to as Hawk’s Eye, rather than Tiger’s Eye.

This mineral was first reported in 1892 by J.D. Dana and was clearly named after its similarities to a real tiger’s eye. The most abundant source of Tiger Eye is located beneath South Africa where most of the material on the market is sourced from.

Traditionally the Tiger Eye Gemstone was carried as a protective amulet against the forces of evil. It was said to ward off curses and to keep the wearer safe from ill-wishes.

Tiger's Eye has been revered for centuries, bringing with it courage, power, protection, & presence. It represents confidence, intelligence & daring.

Hawk’s Eye is a very calming and soothing stone that helps to dissipate intense emotion. It reduces anxiety, stress and worry. It helps those who are quick-tempered to step back and react with less emotion.
