Scolecite Cabochon
Scolecite is part of the zeolite mineral family. It is one of many secondary minerals which forms within the cavities of basalt, granite & syenite. It is a hydrothermal mineral derived from the low temperature alteration of basalts & related rocks, associated with other zeolites, calcite, quartz & prehnite.
Scolecite is a fascinating zeolite mineral. Its name is derived from the Greek word, skolex, meaning worm because under a flame, Scolecite curls up like a worm. Scolecite is usually colorless or white, but can also be pink, salmon, red or green. It is transparent to translucent, with a white streak & a vitreous luster.
It forms long, thin prismatic crystals or needles in close proximity to one another. These needles fuse as they grow, & can only be differentiated when polished.
Scolecite may help with mental health conditions, particularly depression & anxiety. It may assist those feeling drained to feel nourished & energized, which may promote mental & physical healing.
Scolecite is considered a great stone for insomniacs. It is said to put the mind at ease while targeting the underlying cause of sleeplessness. It may also encourage productive thinking while warding off destructive thoughts.
