Pink amethyst is a new color variety of quartz coming from Argentine Patagonia. The geodes are extracted by hand from the El Choique & Colli Cure mines.

Specimens range in color from pale to moderate purplish pink. Numerous scientific studies show the pink color in these Patagonian quartz crystals is caused by the presence of two types of iron. The first is iron activated by exposure to natural radiation, which produces the same chromophore (an atom responsible for color) that causes the violet shades of traditional Amethyst. The second is iron as microscopic hematite particles.

Gemological studies were published in Mineralogical Record, Vol. 51 nº 2 March-April 2020.

In this sense, they are not rose quartz or pink quartz as classically defined, & since the color of amethyst is, by definition, also caused by iron, the Patagonian specimens are referred to as Pink Amethyst.

Throughout history, Amethyst as a stone has come to mean an array of different things. It has been used in prized crowns for monarchs, & even came to signify a symbol of sobriety with wine goblets even being carved out of the crystal.
However, Pink Amethyst’s meaning is yet to be determined in the world. It does not have a longstanding history within society nor is it referenced in folklore or spiritual documents. So any unique, endearing meanings are still very much subjective.
That being said, the fact that this stone appeared somewhat out of thin air is testament to what it means for those who are lucky enough to live during its early years. This stone is a reminder that perhaps the best is yet to come in life, & that we need not live under the false impression that we know everything already.
