Ocean Jasper is a spherulitic variety of Chalcedony with Quartz & Feldspar in many variations of color with variably-colored orbs or spherical inclusions. In highly silicified rhyolite or tuff, quartz & feldspar crystallize in radiating circular formations of needle-like crystals that make up the basis for the kind of structure seen in this jasper.
The existence of chalcedony deposits in the area was first written about in Alfred Lacroix's Minéralogie de Madagascar published in 1922. However orbicular material is not specifically mentioned. Dr. Klaus Thalheimdocumented one of the earliest known examples of Ocean Jasper, a slab from Kabamby. It belonged to Richard Baldauf, an early 20th century German collector.
A piece of Ocean Jasper was found and brought to the Museum of Sciences in Paris in 1950. However, this discovery did not come with the knowledge of its exact source other than the fact that it was found in Madagascar.
In 1997, mineralogist Paul Obenich searched 45 days for Ocean Jasper along the coasts of Madagascar & found the stone’s location only visible during low tide.
Spiritually, Ocean Jasper helps reduce stress and provide a sense of tranquility. It eliminates negative energy, reducing stress & promoting a calm environment. A talisman for patience, it allows the gradual release of negative emotions, making room for a positive outlook.
Also known as Orbicular Jasper, it's defined by circular “orb” like patterns that can be seen as green, brown, blue, yellow, grey, white, pink or red.
