Mahogany Obsidian is a type of Obsidian containing Hematite or Magnetite. It displays banding of black & red colors created from those iron inclusions. Mahogany Obsidian can be commonly found any place where volcanic activity occurs, but the most notable localities include the countries of Mexico, Japan, Afghanistan, Brazil, and USA.
Obsidian is named after Obsuis, a Roman who discovered a similar stone. It is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that's created when lava rich in feldspar & quartz is cooled too rapidly for crystals to form. Unlike intrusive minerals that take thousands of years to form from magma cooling inside the Earth, Obsidian is an extrusive rock, which means it forms after being erupted. It's not considered a true mineral due to its complex composition & absence of a crystalline structure.
According to Mexican tribal legend, Obsidian was created by the gods & was regarded as a sacred stone used for defense, energy & survival.
