Lionskin is a unique combination of Tiger's Eye & Quartz. It may also include Pietersite. Pietersite is a trade name for a dark yellow-blue-grey breccia aggregate made up mainly of Hawk's Eye & Tiger's Eye. It is a variety of chalcedony, a variety of quartz, with embedded fibers of amphibole minerals in varying degrees of alteration. This stone is also known as Nellite. Nellite is a trade name for a semiprecious stone that is a combination of Pietersite & Tiger's Eye.
Quartz is one of the most common minerals found in the Earth's crust & is a member of the silicates, the largest of all mineral classes. It is transparent to translucent, has a conchoidal fracture & a vitreous luster. It is a significant component of many igneous, metamorphic & sedimentary rocks, this natural form of silicon dioxide also has in an impressive range of varieties & colors.
Tiger's Eye is a quartz gemstone, usually amber to brown in color, that forms when crocidolite fibers are replaced by silica. This structure of parallel fibers is preserved in the stone & the chatoyant "eye" crosses the parallel fibers at right angles. It is a member of the Chalcedony mineral class with a silky luster & opaque transparency.
When the creation of Tiger's Eye is incomplete, the result is Hawk's Eye. The resulting stone maintains some of its original bluish gray color along with some yellowish-brown streaks or overtones. When a stone shows these characteristics, it is referred to as Hawk’s Eye, rather than Tiger’s Eye.
