Amethyst - Lilac Tumbles
Amethyst - Lilac Tumbles
Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz. While the name makes most people think of a dark purple gem, amethyst actually occurs in a wide range of purple colors. It can be so light that it is barely perceptible or so dark that it is nearly opaque. The first step in amethyst receiving its purple color begins during crystal growth. Trace amounts of iron are incorporated into a growing quartz crystal. After crystallization, gamma rays, emitted by radioactive materials within the host rock, irradiate the iron to produce the purple color.
Its name comes from the Greek, amethystos (not) & methysko (intoxicate), due to the belief the stone could protect its owner from drunkenness. According to legend, Amethyst was the name of a young virgin who traveled to the Temple of Diana to worship. During her journey, she was approached by Bacchus, the god of wine, fertility, and agriculture. He became enraged when she declined his advances & summoned two tigers to pounce on her. At that exact moment, the goddess Diana emerged & encased Amethyst in a massive Quartz crystal for her protection. Upon seeing her encapsulated in this gleaming crystal, Bacchus denounced his actions and poured his glass of wine over Amethyst, coating the clear quartz crystal with a purple glow.
Spiritually, its color is considered symbolic of peace, cleansing & calming energy. It is a stone of spiritual protection, serenity, understanding, trust, & grace.
