Grey Eye Agate Tumbles
Eye Agates are very unusual stones. They are a type of agate that exhibits one or more round concentric markings known as eyes & these eyes come in a variety of different colors - brown, black, white, blue, & green. Eye Agates are formed when silica-rich water seeps into cavities in volcanic rock & deposits layers of agate. The eyes are formed from the presence of different minerals swirling in those waters, which gives the agate its characteristic banding. The silica-rich water contains impurities, such as iron or manganese, these impurities can create the concentric markings that we see in Eye Agates.
Agate is the name given to numerous varieties of banded Chalcedony, a mineral of the Quartz family. Its name comes from the Achetes River in Sicily, where Agates were first discovered. Primarily formed within volcanic & metamorphic rocks, Agate is a rock formation with a wide variety of colors. Because the colors & patterns found in agates are so varied & so characteristic for the respective localities, there is a confusingly large number of ever-changing varietal & trade names.
The ornamental use of agate dates back to Ancient Greece in jewelry & in the seal stones of Greek warriors. Agates were discovered with the artifacts of Neolithic people & used as healing amulets & ornamentations during the Babylonian era. Its medicinal uses continued through the ancient Greek & Egyptian civilizations, & spread throughout the known civilized world.
