Columbianite
Columbianite
Colombianite is often misidentified as a Tektite, similar in appearance to Moldavite, but it is not. Formed by ancient volcanic activity & not by a meteorite strike, it is what is known as a pseudo-tektite - similar in appearance, but from terrestrial origins.
These are ancient forms of Obsidian, some of the oldest skeletal traces of Obsidian in the world & although it is a form of volcanic glass (Obsidian), its appearance is quite different. It is estimated that these stones are around 30 million years old. Most Colombianite forms as small ovals & spheres with irregular grooves along the outside that look nearly identical to the dimple-like surface of Moldavite.
Colombianite is known as Piedra Rayo, which translates to Lightning Stone & is also believed to be Cinta Mani stones from Sanskrit, whose prophecy is written in both Buddhism & Hinduism. According to ancient writings, this is one of four relics given from the sky to the people, to gain god's mercy over all life surrounding them.
Upon first glance, Colombianite appears a solid, bold stone that cannot be penetrated by light. However, it does display a translucence when light strikes it. Pieces are generally sold by the gram due to their rarity & can usually range from a quarter-inch in size up to a few inches. Local villagers and tribespeople make a living by hand mining these pieces. There are only a few known deposits in the regions of Colombia coming out of the area of Cauca.
The ancient stone is thought to possess great transformative properties, allowing the removal of past traumas & emotional baggage in order to reach the highest potentials. It is also believed that Colombianites may also assist in the recall of past lives, stimulating the inner spirit.
